Unfortunately, leaders’ reluctance to share mistakes publicly means many of us are making those same errors, rather than learning from our colleagues and avoiding similar pitfalls. The hesitancy to share often stems from a fear of embarrassment, retribution, discipline or even liability. Last year, a confidential forum was developed for EMS leaders to anonymously share their mistakes with the hope that others can learn from them. Participants in this session will review and discuss experiences submitted by leaders from throughout EMS. A panel of industry experts will also share their thoughts on each situation and what leaders can do to avoid similar outcomes in the future.
In this session you will learn:
Matthew Streger, JD, a partner at Keavney and Streger, is an experienced EMS executive and healthcare attorney. In 2018, he created the EMS Leadership Confessional. Ray Barishansky, MPH, MS, is the deputy secretary for health preparedness and community protection at the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Michelle Kobayashi, MBA, MSN, is the Administrative Director of HackensackUMC EMS in Hackensack, New Jersey. Michelle has more than two decades of healthcare experience as an EMT, ICU nurse, ED nurse, nurse leader, and now EMS leader. They will be joined by several other veteran EMS leaders who will offer their perspectives on each incident.
