Presenters: Steve Knight, PhD
Timing is everything. That’s certainly true in public safety and emergency medicine, where taking the right action at the right time can be critical. Science is showing that timing also impacts our energy and ability to focus throughout the day. In his best-selling book, WHEN: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Daniel Pink describes the “peak,” “trough” and “recovery” that we each go through each day. These patterns affect our mood, performance and decision-making.
In this session, Steve Knight, PhD, will discuss the implications to fire and EMS of the research outlined in Pink’s book and the recently published evidence-based guidelines for mitigating fatigue in EMS. Knight, who leads the fire service consulting practice for Fitch & Associates and formerly served as assistant chief with St. Petersburg, Florida, Fire & Rescue, will address what the science means for shift patterns, ensuring fitness for duty and scheduled breaks. He’ll also offer suggestions for how leaders can schedule their own work days to take advantage of natural cycles in order to be the most effective.
